Disney Drones: Pyrotechnics of the Future

Admin UAV Drones

The traditional 4th of July Fireworks just got major competition. Can you imagine the Stars and Stripes formed in 3D, from actual stars? Or at least, from sparkling flying objects? As in, drones?

Yes, you read that right. Drone technology has made itself indispensable in the military and it’s gaining importance in tracking as well as aerial imaging. But pyrotechnicians working for Intel gave drones another important role: entertainment. The IT giant collaborated with Disney to create an incredible visual experience for everyone to see, and it comes just in time for the holidays.

If you’ve been to Disney World since November 16, you might have seen the spectacular Christmas light show called Starbright Holidays, performed exclusively by drones over the lagoon near Disney Springs. It’s pure magic to see a Christmas tree and other beautiful shapes form on the night sky out of sparkling colorful lights to the melodies of everyone’s favorite Holiday songs, such as When You Wish Upon a Star and O Christmas Tree.

A fleet of 300 drones performs this breathtaking show that culminates in the image of a blue dove, sending a message of much needed peace to the whole world. It’s mind-blowing to see technology and art working hand in hand to create unforgettable images on the night sky.

The drones weigh about half a pound and they are made from plastic and Styrofoam. They are equipped with little sparkling LED lights that can form over 4 billion color combinations. Impressive, huh? They are only limited by their batteries: currently, these have a runtime of 20 minutes, therefore the show ends just after five minutes, as the drones need to fly to and from the location of their performance.

Hurry up if you want to catch the show: Christmas is just around the corner, and you want to be able to say that you’ve seen the very first manifestation of a revolutionary new art form. The show is free for guests of Disney Saratoga Springs Hotel, and is performed twice every day, at 7 pm and 8:30 pm until January 8.
